The story utilizes challenging vocabulary and addresses difficult topics in order to spark a passion for reading and meaningful conversation between parents and children.

The main character is David, an impatient, young deer, who is eager to follow in his fathers footsteps. We join David as he makes his way from Valley Ridge to Mountain Pass in search of greener grass and a reunion with his father. Along the way David encounters a small community of animals trapped in a dire situation.

A devastating storm has forced them to live in deplorable conditions and, as the rainy season comes to an end, they find themselves with little more than a mud puddle for drinking water. Humbled by their needs Davids eyes are opened as he begins to see what life is like Beyond Valley Ridge.
